Day 6 of about 780.

Early in the morning I awake to the sounds of the call of prayer from the local mosque. While I have heard extensively (thanks Omer) about this 5 times a day ritual, it was quite an experience to hear it first hand. The song of prayer literally envelops the entire city. Yesterday, we were in one of many training sessions in our wedding style tent set up on the roof of our building, and the entire room literally filled with the sounds of the prayer. It was quite a site to see and hear.

All has really been going well and its quite reassuring to realize that everyone here (71 of us total) has the same apprehensions, anxieties and excitements regarding this new experience. Many people here are May 09 grads that followed a similar path to myself and took the last few months to work part time, move home and recollect their lives before embarking on this journey of a lifetime. We even have a few married couples in the group, who literally picked up everything and decided to come to Morocco and do some good. I am slightly envious of their companionship and the fact that they will not be going at this alone, but again there is always a flip side and there are quite a few challenges that also face married couples and all of us, really.

One of my greatest fears is committing a social taboo in regards to the role of women. I have always been an outspoken and fairly confident woman who managed to fit in quite well in American society, but Moroccan society is quite different. Women have a different role to play and I need to get started on learning that. Neither way is better than the other, but both seem to fit into their own respective society. I need to really get cracking on learning that!
The one good thing about Morocco so far has been the beauty of it all. Frankly, I have never found anything beautiful about the desert. I just didn’t see the beauty in sand and lots of brown but when I came to Morocco, I was greatly surprised. While it does have the brown “Aladdin” feel to it, it is remarkably green, lush and overall beautiful. Yesterday we made a trip south through the High Atlas Mountains and they were some of the most beautiful mountains and definitely one of the top three most beautiful trips I have ever made. While the road was curvy and one girl on our bus even got sick, it was stunning. The tall snowcapped mountains were paired with shorter mountains of rolling green trees and grasses; it was absolutely stunning (see photos below).

Other than that, they first few days have been committed to getting some basic knowledge out of the way, mostly some survival Moroccan Arabic and safety/ security issues. Today we ventured out (with the generous help of our trainers) and purchased Moroccan SIM cards for our unlocked phones, or a new phone. The phones were actually pretty reasonably priced and they work similar to the phones we had in Thailand, but considerably more expensive for minutes and texts.
Communication in Morocco is an absolutely amazing feat.

Most of the nation is rural but yet some cell phone providers have 99% coverage, better than even coverage in America. I am sure they have spent a significant amount of money on infrastructure to make this possible and I am quite appreciative. When I say expensive, I am using it relatively. In US dollars, it is actually quite cheap to make and send texts, with incoming being free, but in Dirhams and our PC salary, it seems like it may take up a decent chunk. We shall see, so I apologize now if I can’t call as much as I would like but I promise to do my best and you are always more than welcome to Skype my cell if you want.

In general, im feeling great. Scared? Yes. Nervous? Yes. Excited? Yes. This is all a part of the game and it was quite reassuring to hear from some current PCV’s and get better feel of life post training. For now, I am resting and preparing my brain for the intake of lots of language and culture over the next 8 weeks ☺

The time is here.

Here I am sitting in my hotel room in Philly, physically exhausted from the day I experienced today. Never in my life have I felt so many emotions in one day. From terrified to extremely sad to nervous to happy to in love. This day has been quite an event but Peace Corps Staging has been awesome.

We have gotten the opportunity to meet our training group, we went from invitees to trainees and we got a chance to refocus our minds on why we committed to doing this.

I am eternally grateful to the opportunity to meet these awesome individuals who are willing to give up 2 years of their lives for the betterment of others. They are a truly inspiring group.

Please shoot me an email once in a while, since i will be out of cell/ internet contact for quite some time.

Also, for those interested, official final baggage count.
- 1 large rolling duffel, 50 lbs
- 1 carryon size suitcase, 30 lbs
- 1 North Face backpack!

Yep, thats it, crazy huh :) We will see if it turns out to be enough.

Miss you all already.

And the end is here.

So these last few days have FLEW by. First and foremost, I starting packing (somewhat) which is honestly the earliest I have ever started packing for ANY trip EVER.

CoMo (Columbia, Missouri) was an epic night and I am eternally grateful for one final trip before Africa. Some of the hilights include meeting two of the lead singers from Lady Antebellum (see pics below), the Tim McGraw/ Lady A concert at the Mizzou Arena, El Ranch for dinner, a hot dog from the hot dog stand, a Thursday night at Harpos for 25cent draws, a lunch in Greek Life during a crisis and then a Shakespeares/ YogoLuv trip with Max, Kelley and Claire! It was a jam packed 24 hours.

In addition to that I have been doing quite a bit of last minute shopping for random things I would like to bring with me and even made a trip to the St. Louis Home and Garden Show to see my dad in action.

All in all, it has been a great couple of days and I have sincerely enjoyed getting to see everyone one last time (or talk to you on the phone, those of you who live too far away).

Here are some pics from the past few days.

Mr. Jonas (new Greek Life Advisor/ President's Cult chartering member) and I in Greek Life!

Dave Haywood and I, guitarist and singer for Lady Antebellum :)

Brittany and I with Charles Kelley, lead singer of Lady Antebellum.

Going away cookie cake from my friends at Bath and Body Works.

A Pi Phi and Topher dinner at Pi (Barack Obama's favorite STL joint)

Oh Sean!

Max, Kelley and I at YogoLuv.

Two amazing women, Carrie and Brittany!!

I cannot believe I am just over 28 hours away from moving away for 27 months, but I guess I have been preparing for over a year now. I had a minor freak out this evening but all is going better now. I think its all going to be okay :)

Big day on tap tomorrow, church, meeting, PACKING, dinner and probably no sleep, oh well!

My life is about to change, big time, and I think I'm ready!

T minus 4 days and counting.

So the final sprint to the finish has begun. Not that I know anything about what sprinting fast in a race feels like, but I can imagine it feels something like this, exhausting.

The past few days have been filled with jam packed dinner and lunch dates leaving my belly full and my heart satisfied.

Heres the rundown.

Sunday:
Grand Slams with my friends, provided of course by my awesome live-in chef who has double duty as my mother
Dinner: NEW WONDERFUL FANTASTIC Dominos pizza with the family (the ones who live in STL at least)

Monday:
Lunch at Cracker Barrel with my Dad, for some of their world famous Chicken and Dumplings
Dinner with Danielle Hohmeier at Hodaks for some great friend chicken

Tuesday:
Lunch at Mom's Deli with Brittany Perrin
Dinner at Pi with some of my Pi Phi loves (Danielle LeCompte, Erin Cover, Christy Solberg and Jenna King) and Topher aka Christopher Timmerman

Wednesday:
Lunch at Imo's with Julie Fitzler
Dinner at La Fuentes with my mom, Aunt Carol and Eva K!

Now its off to CoMo for the Tim McGraw/ Lady Antebellum Concert at Mizzou Arena and a Thursday night at Harpos, followed with a late night snack at the one and only El Rancho for some shredded chicken nachos :)

The days are getting more intense since I havent started packing and I made my first (of what I am sure will be many) trips to Wal-Mart. There is a lot to do in these coming days and I am just praying/hoping it all gets done before 6:15 am on Monday!!!

I know I am going to miss this chaos, since after all, I feel like I thrive on it but change is good and needed!

Love you all.
